"The first breath of fresh air in five years"-Katie
Five years ago Katie Smith sat in a doctors office and listened to her world fall apart as the doctor say her son has Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy, a fatal disease that known for progressive muscle weakness. Soon after the diagnosis of her son, Katie's husband moved to Florida and she became a single parent. Things were not getting easier for Katie as she persisted to work three jobs and attend night school all while going to Atlanta once a week for her son who was selected for a clinical trial. Katie and her two children lived in a rental home that was falling apart under their feet. The house was in very rough condition having mold and mice, and One night while Katie was in the bathtub it collapsed in on her. After contacting the landlord on the incident her rent was raised fifty dollars a month. Things were getting no easier for Katie as a single mom who worked three jobs, and taking care of two children, Katie decided to take the step to apply for the habitat home. When Katie received the call that she had been chosen to receive the next home Habitat would build, she stated "It was like the first breath of fresh air I had received in five years." Katie is a mom who simply wants to love and provide for her children unconditionally, and now she will have the opportunity to do just that in a home built with love, faith, and purpose. Katie is the perfect example of the way we can fulfill our mission statement of putting Gods love into action and supporting a family through the rough journey that became the reality of their life.
